- Economic Trend: Income inequality gap is increasing
- Opportunity: Career Advancement courses for lower-income workers, teaching them how to advance in their current jobs & improving their resumes/interview skills in order to get new jobs

- Instead of taking money away from the wealthy, let's try to bring lower incomes up by increasing their skills and knowledge of the workforce.
- The prototypical customer is someone in a low paying job, with a relatively skilled background or a passion to move up in a specific role or organization
- This opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because there is a large market, but it will be difficult to make money since the target population is low-income earners.
- I have received these types of services as a university student, and it seems relevant to extend these services to others looking for career advancement.
- Economic Trend: US is the UK's largest single-country trading partner, and trade is expected to increase post-Brexit
- Opportunity: App for importers/exporters to communicate and trade on a shared platform between the US and the UK
- Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/03/world/europe/after-brexit.html New trade deals means more traders doing business between the two nations.
- Traders will look for an expedited process of doing business together on a larger scale.
- The prototypical customer is an importer or exporter in the US or UK.
- This opportunity will be relatively easy to exploit since there will be a drastic and sudden increase in demand, but it could be tricky to meet all legal regulations.
- My experience in London led me to believe people there are excited about the possibility of increasing trade with the US.
- Regulatory Change: Legalizing medical marijuana in Florida (and possible future legalization of recreational marijuana)
- Opportunity: Dispensary delivery service similar to Amazon but for marijuana
- Source: https://ballotpedia.org/Florida_Marijuana_Legalization_Initiative_(2020) Medical marijuana is legal in FL, and recreational legalization may follow soon
- Start now delivering medical marijuana, similar to a prescription drug delivery service, and you will already be ahead of competitors when recreational legalization occurs.
- Current prototypical customer is medical marijuana patient, but this will expand in the future.
- This opportunity will only be easy to exploit if taken advantage of before competitors enter the market.
- As a Florida voter, I keep up to date on the passage of different bills in the state, and since medical marijuana passed semi-recently I believe there is a market to be taken advantage of.
- Regulatory Change: All single-use packaging becoming fully recyclable (specific bill rejected but many states are trending towards eliminating single-use plastic to eliminate waste)
- Opportunity: Produce plant-based compostable packaging materials
- Source: https://therevelator.org/california-plastic-legislation/ Many states and cities are trying to pass regulations on single-use plastic.
- Plastic bans are becoming more common, and companies will soon need solutions.
- The prototypical customer is a packaging company that currently uses single-use plastic.
- This opportunity will be difficult to produce in a cost-efficient way, but should be easy to exploit if successfully manufactured because the demand will be high.
- The recent laws in Gainesville regarding plastic have made me think about the direction regulations have been progressing towards, and what companies will do to adjust.

Abby,
ReplyDeleteThe economic trend opportunity you stated is great. I definitely see this as an opportunity since in our current society we have steered away from trade jobs. I completely agree that we should not be taking money from those who are rightfully wealthy, instead push others to seek the same. At the end of the day, I am a pure believer that one decides if they want to work as a fast food cashier. Nonetheless, minimum wage should not be raised, that money should be used for your Career Advancement courses opportunity.
Hey, Abby I really liked the topics that you chose. I was specifically intrigued by the 1st topic that talked about income inequality gap increasing and your comment about the rich getting richer. I thought that was funny. I also love the insight you gave to each trend and the brief analyst of each trend. I am very interested in what else you’re going to post. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteHi Abby! I really liked the way you covered your topics. In particular, I thought your evaluation of income inequality and of Brexit were insightful. I have seen the data for the unequal distribution of wealth that you presented in your first subject. It still stuns me that the income gap is so wide, with the top 10% earning 50% of the income and the top 1% earning 20%. Your idea for educating lower earners to help them increase their earning power is a great step in the right direction. I, like you, also addressed the Brexit issue; I covered a more narrow swath of trade, pharmaceuticals, while you covered import and export in general. I truly enjoy your posts and look forward to seeing more from you. Brett
ReplyDeleteHello Abby,
ReplyDeleteIn reference to the regulatory trend that you chose on medicinal marijuana, this could become a very lucrative opportunity if made available to private businesses. By taking the initial steps now to create channels of distribution for recreational marijuana, businesses can be prepared for the large demand that will immediately follow the legalization of marijuana in Florida. This will undoubtedly be a race to market for many businesses that are interested in this issue, and the ones that take the necessary steps now rather than later will be that much further ahead of the competition. You included some interesting articles for this assignment, and this one in particular will be interesting to see unfold. Thanks, Darren.
Hi Abby,
ReplyDeleteThe topics you decided to write about are extremely interesting. I was specifically interested in the marijuana legislation article. Think of all the money that could be made if recreational use is allowed in Florida. However, it is important to note that recreational use of cannabis is not allowed federally. As a result, all cannabis businesses are hit with heavy taxes due to the illegal nature of their business. Keep up with the great work!
Hi Abby,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read through your opportunities, specifically the one about the inequality gap stood out to me. I agree that instead of taking money away from wealthier people, we should try and advance lower income families resources to make it more accessible for them to get higher paying jobs. This is a controversial topic so I think it will be rather difficult to exploit. Overall, I enjoyed reading your work!
Hi Abby,
ReplyDeleteYou have some really interesting opportunities. The one about a delivery medical marijuana is interesting because it could help the people who may be unable to travel to the dispensary but are in need of it for a medical condition. I don't think an app is the best idea to track the trade between two large countries who trade a large amount of goods every year. I think it would be very susceptible to crashing.
