My Solution

To alleviate the persisting income gap, I plan to elevate the skills and knowledge of lower-income workers by providing career advancement services. Blue-collar workers, workers who want to enter a management track, people with a GED or incomplete college education, or people who were unable to attend college due to finances or extenuating circumstances will be targeted. The customer will pay a fee to attend classes. Similar to an exercise class, the services can be bought on a class-by-class basis or by a monthly subscription for unlimited classes. The classes would include one-on-one career planning meetings, resume-building sessions, mock interviews, group workshops on special topics, and a professional attire closet. The sessions could take place at community centers and public libraries. The classes will be advertised on facebook, and by joining the facebook group the customers will be able to view upcoming events. Providing disadvantaged people with better resources will allow them to learn how to better articulate their skillset, and leverage their skills into getting higher paying jobs.

  1. Wow Abby I am moved by your passion to solving the income gap that is hurting our county. And just by looking at your solutions and the depth you get into doing what you can to help these individuals with classes, etc is amazing. I hope this actually comes to pass one day because we really need to do something to solve this problem.

  2. Hi Abby,
I find your solution to be amazing. Having a subscription service would be a great way to help people in need of career advancement. Using what every college already does for the private sector is a great idea. I would however create an application specifically for your service. All in all, I believe that this service will solve this income gap or at the very less reduce it.

  3. Hi Abby,
I think you have a very interesting concept here. You are providing a way to begin leveling the playing field for people who have some significant barriers to higher earning. One barrier I see to the implementation of your idea is the financial challenges your customers face. I may be difficult for them to pay for your services. One way to mitigate this barrier would be to partner with business who would be willing to pay a service fee that would allow them to connect with your clients. This would provide you with additional income and, perhaps, allow you to provide you service on a sliding scale based on income. Very good idea! B

  4. Hi Abby,
I really like this idea. I think that is is very smart and there are plenty of people who would benefit from some kind of career development workshop, especially if they have never been trained on professionalism in the first place. I think the advertisements on Facebook are a good idea, and making a Facebook group is smart as it makes the information easily accessible.
